1938 - Johnny Vander Meer (Cincinnati Reds) threw the first of two consecutive no-hitters. 
1950 - Ben Hogan returned to tournament play after a near fatal car accident. He won the U.S. Open. 
1972 - Hank Aaron tied the National League record for 14 grand-slam home runs in a career. 
1974 - The Kansas City Scouts and Washington Capitals officially received their NHL franchises. The Scouts moved to Denver before the start of the 1976-77 season to become the Colorado Rockies and later the New Jersey Devils. 
1988 - Rick Rhoden (New York Yankees) became the first pitcher to start as a designated hitter. 
1990 - Nolan Ryan became the oldest player to throw a no-hitter. It was the sixth of his career. 
1995 - Mark McGwire tied a major league record when he hit home runs in five consecutive games. 
1995 - Lee Smith set a major league record when he got his 16th consecutive save in 16 appearances. 
2010 - ESPN launched ESPN 3D. 
2010 - The FIFA World Cup opened in South Africa. It was the first time it was held in Africa. 
2012 - Rafael Nadal won his record seventh French Open title when he defeated Novak Djokovic.

Jose Mourinho has been banned from driving for six months after he caught speeding.Reports say the Portuguese was captured on a speed camera travelling at 60mph in a 50mph zone on the A3 Esher bypass, in Surrey, in September 2014.At a hearing in court yesterday He was ordered to pay a £910 fine for driving 10mph above the speed limit and a £75 surcharge and £85 court costs.however Mourinho did not appear in court himself but entered a guilty plea ahead of the hearing. This offence pushed him over the maximum number of points to trigger a ban having already had nine points on his license

Reports say CRISTIANO Ronaldo's mother Dolores Aveiro was detained at the airport for trying to leave Spain with £32,700 in cash.According to reports she was stopped at Madrid's Barajas Airport and forced to hand over the money after it was discovered  in her hand luggage.The cash was confiscated because she couldn't prove its origin.Under Spanish anti-money laundering and tax evasion laws, any traveller entering or leaving the country with more than €10,000 in cash have to declare the money.Cash seized from people who breach the rules is held until officials can prove its origin and pay a fine however Sources say Ronaldo's mum was ignorant of the rules about cash limits....

The double Olympic champion Has accused MO Farah of letting down fans after cancelling his planned appearance at the Birmingham Diamond League.Responding to the accusation Farah said in a statement that he had been left ‘emotionally and physically drained’ by the doping allegations that have been made against his coach Alberto Salazar and his training partner Galen Rupp...Farah is able to command at least £50,000 when he runs in Diamond League races and was due to be the highest-paid athlete in Birmingham. His decision not to compete was taken on Saturday evening after a 30-minute appearance in front of the world’s media during which he insisted he is a “100% clean athlete”.Soon afterwards he decided he would not race on Sunday. It is understood British Athletics, the representatives from the event sponsor, Sainsbury’s, and his team spent three hours trying to change his mind, but to no avail. In his statement Farah apologized to fans for not showing up and asked for their understanding. His late decision to withdraw from the 1500m left many of the 9,000 crowd – about 4,000 short of capacity – bitterly frustrated.
